Erik had good and bad days at school. He needed a lot of help staying on task. When he became too much to handle, the teacher would send him to the other first grade class until he could contain himself. His teacher said that at one point, he was crawling on the floor, imitating a lizard.
After hearing about this, the psychologist couldn’t understand why we wouldn’t put Erik on Ritalin. I knew I had to do something. I was burned out going to the doctors all the time. Chris was working twelve hours a day, often six days a week. On his one day off, he would be an enormous help; however, it was never enough.
Exhausted, I went to the doctor. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease causing an under-active thyroid. The diagnosis explained why I was chronically tired. The thyroid medicine helped take the edge off, but I was still tired and had frequent headaches and infections.
We had good insurance coverage; nevertheless, the medical deductibles, along with all of our other medical needs, were taking their toll on our finances. Chris believed that we were spending too much money on doctors and allergy medicines, with little progress. At this point, I decided to look into alternative medicine beyond chiropractic. If my husband wouldn’t allow the kids to go on Ritalin, then I would try the alternative path, even though our insurance would not cover most of it.
