Discovering a Connection Between Antibiotics and Hyperactivity
The boys were not getting along at all. And Erik was becoming more aggressive out of self-defense. I was at a loss and didn’t know what to do next. I hoped that the social skills group would be able to help them work it out.
Erik was becoming more hyperactive. He would walk across the back of the couch or climb all over it as he watched television. The cushions would be thrown all over the room. At times he was not as hyper. I realized that when he was on antibioticsparticularly Zithromax (azithromycin)his hyperactivity increased.
Westley’s test scores were still very poor, mostly because of his handwriting. His science teacher gave him a zero on a test and, next to the grade, wrote, “I can’t read this paper.” He had been promised an AlphaSmart keyboard one year before. It finally arrived. It was defective, and it could not print out his work. It was November, and nothing was going right for him. He received an F on a history test. His teacher gave him a chance to retake the exam, but he didn’t bother to study for it. He didn’t seem to care anymore. His backpack was always filled with crinkled paper, bulging out of his folders. The only good news was that Westley wasn’t getting as many respiratory infections as before. I thought that possibly the nystatin treatment for his candida was improving his health.
Other than the first several months after my children’s birth, I was experiencing the darkest moments of my motherhood. I was confused and clueless as to what to do next to help Westley. I felt it was a hopeless situation. I had tried everything and at this point had to let go and put it into God’s hands. After my kids left for school I sat down and prayed, fervently. My prayer was soon to be answered in a big way.
